Jasperilla Old Ale is Austin brewer's best friend

Independence Brewing Co. in Austin has added its first seasonal brew to its lineup, a strong ale called Jasperilla. But you will have to act fast to get a taste of this limited-edition, draft-only beer named for the brewer's dog.

Here's how Amy and Rob Cartwright describe the brew and inspiration behind it:

"Brilliantly golden, Jasperilla is a unique take on an old ale. It has a complex yet subtle aroma — a blend of hops, citrus, and biscuity notes. Just the right amount of hops balances the mild maltiness and alcohol flavors."

"We named this beer after our dog Jasper because he has brought so much joy to our lives. And this time of year, we wanted to spread a little of that love and good will around. We got Jasper from a local dog rescue group called Forgotten Friends. He has been a constant source of laughs, smiles, and goodwill that kept our spirits high all the late nights and long hours at the brewery."

Here's the catch, Independence won't be bottling this and it is available only at The Gingerman and the The Draught House in Austin.

They are only putting part of this young Old Ale out for consumption and aging the rest for a year. At 9.3 percent alcohol this has the potential to age well. When done right, strong beers such as barleywine and strong ales develop complex and mellow flavors over time when stored in a dark, cool place.

If anybody has tasted this yet, please drop me your review in the comment box to the right.

Austinites, save me a pint.

Prosit!
