About the Brewery

When Rob Cartwright brewed his first batch of beer with his mom at age 14, he began a lifelong journey of brewing. It wasn't like Rob descended from a long family line of brewers or anything like that. It was that many people in Victoria, British Columbia had taken to brewing beer at home (because the beer taxes in Canada were so high).

Rob's homebrewing skills really came in handy when he headed off to study at the University of Texas at Austin. What started out as a desire to save money, evolved into a passion for brewing. Rob made up his mind to pursue brewing professionally…and in 1994, during his final year at UT, he started brewing at Copper Tank in Austin.

During the nine years he worked at the Copper Tank, Rob learned from his mentors and developed into an award-winning brewer. After time, Rob started to dream of doing something more…of packaging his beer and making it easy to get around town. He started dreaming of building a microbrewery in Austin.

Independence Brewing Co. is the culmination of that dream. Located in southeast Austin, amongst the city's emerging high tech companies, the brewery is reflection of the creative energy and pioneering spirit that makes Austin (and Texas for that matter) great.

We are dedicated to brewing the finest hand-crafted beer in Texas. We use only the purest ingredients to create flavorful beers, easy-drinking beers with a laid-back finish. Truly Austin beer.
